- 8 slices thick-cut brioche or challah bread
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp butter (for greasing)
- Maple syrup (for serving)
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
- Arrange bread slices in the dish, overlapping if needed.
- Whisk eggs, milk, molasses, brown sugar, spices, vanilla, and salt in a bowl.
- Pour mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to soak.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours).
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes until golden and set.
- Let rest 5 minutes before serving with maple syrup.
Notes
- Use stale bread for better absorption.
- Substitute half-and-half for richer texture.
- Top with whipped cream or powdered sugar if desired.
- Leftovers reheat well in microwave or toaster oven.
