Description

Rich and moist black velvet cupcakes with a smooth cream cheese frosting.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp black food coloring
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix sugar, oil, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, mixing well.
  5. Stir in black food coloring and hot water until batter is smooth and dark.
  6. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full and bake for 18-20 minutes.
  7. Let cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for a deeper black color.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep cupcakes light.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
